Black Walnut
One of the most prized and scarce native timbers, walnut has traditionally been used in furniture making, as well as in shipbuilding, and rifle stocks. Indians used the green hulls of the walnuts to poison fish, and the tree’s roots tend to poison neighboring plants. The wood is very hard and durable, though works easy and can be polished to a silky sheen. It is a coarse and open-grained wood.
